Maitama Demolition: Wike Moves to Tackle Flooding and Blocked Drainage Channels [VIDEO]

Demolition of properties accused of obstructing waterways and drainage channels has commenced in Maitama, Abuja, following a directive by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Wike ordered the demolition after inspecting areas affected by flooding in the capital following heavy rainfall on Sunday.

The FCT Minister said buildings constructed on or obstructing water channels would be removed, warning property owners that structures blocking waterways would not be spared.

He said the demolition exercise would continue in Maitama and other affected areas, with the government targeting properties contributing to flooding by restricting the flow of stormwater.

Wike warned that the fact that flooding had not previously occurred in some areas did not mean residents were safe from future disasters.

The development comes amid renewed concerns over flooding, blocked drainage channels and construction along waterways in Abuja.
