The escalating conflict in the Middle East is creating a fresh threat to the global economy.

The immediate concern is oil.

Although the conflict is concentrated in the Middle East, its economic consequences could reach countries thousands of kilometres away.

Nigeria and other developing economies could face higher fuel, food and transport costs if the disruption continues.

Three Major Oil Routes Under Pressure

The crisis is developing around three strategic areas.

Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline is one of them.

The pipeline carries millions of barrels of Saudi crude from the country’s eastern oilfields to Yanbu on the Red Sea.

Its purpose includes allowing Saudi Arabia to move oil without relying entirely on the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports of drone attacks forced Saudi authorities to suspend the pipeline’s operations.

That has increased concerns about the security of alternative export routes.

Bab al-Mandab Becomes Another Flashpoint

The Bab al-Mandab Strait is another major concern.

The waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

It is a vital route for vessels travelling between the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Reports that Iran-backed Houthi fighters had seized Perim Island have raised concerns about shipping through the area.

Any prolonged disruption could force more vessels to avoid the Red Sea.

Hormuz Remains Critical

The Strait of Hormuz is perhaps the biggest concern for energy markets.

The waterway normally carries a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

The wider conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States has already disrupted normal traffic through the area.

With other routes now facing pressure, concerns about global energy supplies have intensified.

Oil Prices React

Global oil markets have responded sharply to the growing uncertainty.

Brent crude has moved well above $100 per barrel, trading around the $107-$108 range according to the figures cited in the report.

Analysts have warned that prices could rise further if supply disruptions continue.

A prolonged shock could push Brent towards $114-$120 per barrel.

Why Developing Economies Are Vulnerable

The consequences extend far beyond the oil market.

Countries that import large amounts of fuel are particularly exposed.

Higher crude prices can quickly increase the cost of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel.

That then affects transportation.

It also increases the cost of producing and distributing food.

Food Prices Could Rise

Modern agriculture depends heavily on energy.

Farm machinery uses fuel.

Food processing requires power.

Trucks and ships transport agricultural products to consumers.

When energy prices rise, those costs eventually reach supermarkets and markets.

For poorer households, even a modest increase can have a major impact.

Shipping Costs Are Another Threat

The Red Sea is also an important international shipping corridor.

If shipping companies avoid the Bab al-Mandab because of security concerns, vessels may have to travel around the Cape of Good Hope.

That can add significant time to journeys between Asia and Europe.

Longer routes mean higher fuel consumption, insurance costs and freight charges.

Those costs can eventually affect everything from food and medicine to machinery and spare parts.

Developing Countries Face the Greatest Pressure

The shock will not affect every country equally.

Countries with large debts and weak currencies have less room to respond.

Nations that recently removed fuel subsidies may also feel the impact more quickly.

Landlocked countries in Africa can face additional transport costs because they depend on neighbouring countries and major shipping corridors for fuel and food.

Fragile economies are even more vulnerable.

Higher prices can increase social tensions and create additional pressure on governments.

What Governments Can Do

Governments cannot control the conflict.

However, they can reduce its impact.

Targeted support can help vulnerable households without returning to expensive blanket fuel subsidies.

Market monitoring can discourage hoarding and unjustified price increases.

Strategic reserves of fuel and food can provide temporary protection during supply disruptions.

Governments should also publish clear information about how international prices affect local costs.

Building Long-Term Protection

The current crisis also highlights the need for greater economic resilience.

Countries can reduce their exposure by investing in domestic energy production, renewable power and local food systems.

Diversifying transport routes can also reduce dependence on a single international corridor.

These measures cannot eliminate the impact of a global crisis.

They can, however, make the shock easier to absorb.

The Bigger Picture

The current crisis began in the Middle East.

But its economic consequences could be global.

A disruption in one oil-producing region can affect fuel prices, food costs, shipping and interest rates around the world.

For countries already struggling with inflation and debt, the consequences could be especially severe.

The key challenge for governments is therefore not simply to explain rising prices.

It is to protect vulnerable citizens while building an economy that is less exposed to the next global shock.
