Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step aside, claiming he no longer has the capacity needed to effectively govern Nigeria as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections.

Obi shared his concerns during a political engagement, noting the deteriorating economic conditions, growing insecurity, unemployment, and the rising cost of living. He highlighted the unprecedented hardship faced by Nigerians, with many households struggling due to skyrocketing food prices, inflation, and the depreciating value of the naira. He criticized the current administration for failing to address these challenges effectively.

According to Obi, “President Tinubu lacks the capacity to lead Nigeria at this critical time and should step aside to allow competent leadership that can move the country forward.”

As a former governor of Anambra State, Obi emphasized that Nigeria needs visionary leadership to restore economic stability, enhance security, attract investments, and create opportunities for the youth. He also encouraged Nigerians to engage with the democratic process by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participating in the 2027 elections.

Obi argued that the upcoming general election should prioritize competence, integrity, and accountability over ethnicity, religion, or political patronage. He believes the nation deserves leaders who will focus on citizens’ welfare and implement policies promoting inclusive economic growth.

These remarks are likely to spark further political debate as parties begin consultations and strategic planning for the 2027 presidential election. Supporters of President Tinubu defend his administration’s performance, stating that it inherited significant economic and security challenges and has introduced reforms to stabilize the economy and lay a foundation for long-term growth.

Political analysts anticipate that exchanges between opposition figures and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will dominate the political scene as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. As political activities gain momentum across Nigeria, citizens are expected to closely scrutinize the policy proposals and campaign messages of major political parties in anticipation of another fiercely contested presidential election.
