Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have encountered another setback with 318 of its fighters, including four commanders, reportedly defecting to join the Sudanese army.

These defectors arrived in Al-Dabba locality in Northern State, bringing with them up to 50 combat vehicles, as stated by Sudanese authorities.

This development occurs amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, now in its fourth year, resulting in widespread destruction and a significant humanitarian crisis throughout the country.

Welcoming Defectors to the Sudanese Army

Border Guards commander Mohamed Saleh Younes greeted the defectors, assuring them of a warm reception upon their return to the army. He emphasized the commitment of Sudanese forces to restore security and stability nationwide.

Lieutenant-Colonel Musa Ali Ahmed, leading the defectors, cited issues in the RSF’s organizational and institutional structure as reasons for their departure. He mentioned that the decision to join the army was aimed at preserving Sudan’s unity.

Continuing Departures from RSF

This defection follows another recent wave where approximately 300 RSF members, including 21 commanders, also joined the Sudanese army. Prominent figures have been leaving the RSF over recent months, including political adviser Fares al-Nour, field commander Ali Rizqallah, and Major-General Al-Nour Ahmed Adam.

These increasing defections are likely to add pressure on the RSF as the army strives to consolidate its position on several fronts.

Ongoing Conflict Across Sudan

The conflict began in April 2023 due to a power struggle between Sudanese army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. Fighting has since spread across much of Sudan, affecting regions like Darfur, Blue Nile, and Kordofan.

The protracted conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions, leading to one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

A New Challenge for RSF

The influx of former RSF fighters and military vehicles could bolster the Sudanese army’s manpower and equipment, potentially enhancing its military advantage. For the RSF, these ongoing defections could further deplete its ranks and highlight internal divisions.

With no durable political resolution apparent, these developments indicate both factions remain focused on fortifying their military positions as the devastating conflict persists.
