Community policing is emphasized as an essential approach to combat crime by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. He advocates for enhanced community policing as a key measure to address insecurity throughout Nigeria.
During his speech at the Arewa Awareness Summit on Unity Against Insecurity in Kaduna, the Sultan highlighted that sustainable peace hinges on the close cooperation between security agencies and local communities.
Represented by the Chiroman Kano, Alhaji Adamu Lamido Sanusi, the Sultan underlined the importance of involving residents, particularly the youth, who have intimate knowledge of their communities, in intelligence gathering and crime prevention efforts.
He emphasized his belief in community policing, stating the necessity of collaborating with the local populace to effectively combat crime.
The Sultan pointed out his ongoing interactions with imams, religious leaders, youth groups, and other community members to foster peace and enhance security within his territory.
He noted that intelligence gathering is vital since community members are often the first to detect suspicious activities and criminal behavior.
He stressed that collaboration between local communities and security forces could greatly enhance efforts to tackle banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
He remarked on the importance of this partnership, asserting that joint efforts are crucial for fighting crime in both communities and the country.
Additionally, he praised the summit’s organizers, recognizing the event as a valuable venue for sharing ideas and building partnerships to confront insecurity.
Dr. Abdullahi Idris, Director-General of the Arewa for Peace, Unity, Cohesion and Development Initiative, mentioned that the summit aimed to craft practical and lasting solutions to the security issues facing Northern Nigeria.
