The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed confidence that it can win the 2027 presidential election without relying on a coalition of opposition parties.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the declaration while discussing the ADC’s preparations for the 2027 general election.

Abdullahi said the party initially supported the idea of a broad opposition coalition because it could make the task of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) easier.

However, he maintained that the ADC has now developed sufficient political strength to contest the election independently.

“We don’t need a coalition to win this election. The African Democratic Congress does not need a coalition to win this election,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that changes within the opposition political landscape had affected the original coalition arrangement, particularly following the departure of some major political figures.

According to him, although the ADC remains open to cooperation with other opposition groups, such cooperation is no longer considered essential to its chances of victory.

“If we are able to build the kind of coalition that we started, maybe it’ll make our job easier, but we don’t need that coalition to win the election. We don’t necessarily need the coalition to win the election,” he said.

The declaration comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the ADC seeking to position its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as a strong challenger to President Bola Tinubu.

The party’s confidence marks a shift from earlier efforts to build a broad opposition alliance capable of combining the strength of several major political blocs.

With the 2027 election approaching, the ability of the ADC to translate its growing political profile into nationwide grassroots support will remain a major test for the opposition party.

The APC, meanwhile, has continued preparations for President Tinubu’s re-election bid, with its governors publicly declaring their support for his second-term campaign.
