Manchester City have completed a stunning deadline-day move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández in a deal reportedly worth £125 million, matching the British transfer record.
The Argentine international has agreed to a five-year contract with City that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
The transfer represents one of the biggest deals of the summer and underlines Manchester City’s determination to strengthen their midfield as they begin a new phase under manager Enzo Maresca.
Fernández, 25, previously joined Chelsea from Benfica for around £107 million in January 2023 after impressing during Argentina’s successful 2022 World Cup campaign. His latest transfer means he has now been involved in two separate deals worth more than £100 million.
The move also brings Fernández back together with Maresca, who worked with the midfielder during his time at Chelsea.
City see Fernández as an important part of their midfield rebuild. Following Rodri’s departure to Barcelona and the exit of other experienced players, the club needed a versatile midfielder capable of dictating play, moving the ball forward and creating opportunities in attacking areas.
Fernández enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists. He also played a significant role for Argentina during their run to the 2026 World Cup final.
His versatility is expected to be particularly valuable to Maresca. Fernández can play as a defensive midfielder, operate as a number eight or move further forward as a creative playmaker.
The signing is another major indication of City’s ambitions following a busy summer transfer window.
After losing the Community Shield to Arsenal, City have moved aggressively to reshape their squad as they attempt to challenge for the Premier League title.
Fernández will now be expected to play a leading role in that rebuilding process and help provide the quality and experience needed in the heart of City’s midfield.
