Smuggling networks engaged in human trafficking along the northern coast of France are adapting their strategies as intensified enforcement diminishes the availability of the small boats typically utilized for transporting migrants across the English Channel.

A BBC investigation has revealed that criminal organizations are increasingly turning to larger inflatable vessels that can accommodate a significantly greater number of individuals simultaneously. This shift has raised alarms among emergency responders, as overcrowded boats may heighten the risks faced by migrants attempting the perilous crossing.

A particularly notable instance involved a vessel measuring approximately 15 meters, which recently transported around 230 migrants towards the United Kingdom. The sight of such an unusually large boat has reignited political scrutiny regarding the UK’s capacity to manage irregular migration across the Channel.

The rise of these larger vessels also underscores the increasing collaboration among competing smuggling factions. Sources knowledgeable about the networks indicate that criminal groups that once operated independently are now increasingly sharing resources due to the scarcity of small boats.

French authorities have reported that law enforcement is currently intercepting about two-thirds of boats before they depart from the French coastline. However, the decline in successful launches seems to have led to a new issue: smugglers are raising their fees for the remaining opportunities.

Reportedly, prices have surged to as high as €2,000 per passenger, compared to approximately €1,300 a year prior. Additionally, migrants are being increasingly required to pay in cash, a practice that smugglers claim ensures their commitment to the journey.

The dangers were starkly illustrated on 4 August when approximately 170 migrants required rescue after a boat caught fire in the middle of the Channel.

In response, both Britain and France are implementing further measures to bolster police presence along the French coast, aiming to disrupt smuggling activities and avert perilous crossings.

On a recent morning at Gravelines beach, observers noted the presence of only one small boat being launched.
