The United Nations has expressed renewed concerns regarding the emerging El Niño weather pattern, cautioning that the world may encounter an exceptionally intense phase of extreme weather in the upcoming months.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the Earth has entered what he termed a “danger zone of extreme weather” as the impacts of this phenomenon start to manifest in various regions globally.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicates that the ongoing El Niño could rank among the most powerful recorded events in over seventy years, with its effects likely persisting until at least February 2027.

El Niño is a naturally occurring climatic phenomenon that arises when ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific rise significantly above normal levels. The resulting alterations in atmospheric circulation can disrupt weather patterns far beyond the Pacific area.

Certain nations may endure extended droughts, while others might experience increased rainfall, flooding, and more intense tropical storms.

This phenomenon is also anticipated to exacerbate already heightened global temperatures attributed to human-induced climate change, raising alarms about heatwaves and other weather-related crises.

“El Niño is being supersized before our eyes,” Guterres cautioned, emphasizing that the planet is entering increasingly unfamiliar climatic conditions.

Researchers have been diligently observing the Pacific as sea surface temperatures continue to escalate. In the critical region utilized to evaluate El Niño conditions, temperatures have recently exceeded the long-term average by more than 2°C.

Forecast models suggest that the warming trend could become even more pronounced, with monthly temperatures potentially nearing 4°C above average.

If these predictions materialize, the event could emerge as the most powerful El Niño since records began in at least 1950, according to current estimates.

The potential ramifications are particularly alarming for communities already susceptible to extreme weather, food insecurity, and related challenges.
