The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over 204 pump-action rifles seized at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW).
The firearms were reportedly imported from Turkey and intercepted by security operatives following intelligence received about their movement into the country.
According to the report, the seizure was carried out as part of efforts to prevent the weapons from getting into illegal circulation and potentially being used to fuel insecurity.
The interception underscores the role of intelligence-driven operations in stopping the illicit movement of firearms through Nigeria’s ports and borders.
The handover to the NCCSALW is expected to ensure that the seized weapons are properly documented, controlled and eventually disposed of in accordance with established procedures.
The development also highlights the importance of cooperation between the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies in monitoring the movement of small arms and light weapons into the country.
Authorities have continued to focus on strengthening border controls as part of efforts to disrupt criminal networks involved in the illegal importation and distribution of firearms.
The seizure of the 204 rifles at one of Nigeria’s major ports is expected to further draw attention to the need for tighter cargo inspection, intelligence sharing and coordinated security operations at the country’s entry points.
