Traffic congestion has worsened along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a container-laden trailer fell on Kara Bridge.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon.
As a result, the Lagos-bound section of the bridge was completely blocked. Traffic quickly built up, with the gridlock stretching beyond the Berger area.
Motorists Face Long Delays
The incident has also affected vehicles travelling inward Lagos.
Motorists are currently sharing the available section of the expressway at Kara Bridge. This has further slowed movement in both directions.
The latest incident comes as motorists are already dealing with delays caused by ongoing rehabilitation work on the bridge.
The Federal Government is currently replacing damaged expansion joints as part of the repair project.
Alternative Route Being Created
Officials are working to create additional space for motorists.
Barriers are being removed from a section of the bridge that was previously closed for the rehabilitation work.
The section is expected to reopen temporarily to help reduce the pressure on the remaining carriageway.
If opened as planned, the additional passage could improve traffic flow along the busy Lagos-Ibadan corridor.
LASTMA, Ogun Officials Respond
Traffic management officials are also at the scene.
Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and their counterparts from Ogun State are directing motorists.
They are also assisting with efforts to restore movement and reduce the growing backlog of vehicles.
Kara Bridge Repairs Continue
The Kara Bridge rehabilitation began on September 8, 2026.
The two-week project followed an earlier postponement to allow authorities to improve their traffic management plans.
The work was directed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
It involves replacing damaged expansion joints on the bridge.
The rehabilitation is scheduled to end on September 22, 2026.
However, the trailer accident has created additional pressure on motorists using the route.
Before Tuesday’s incident, commuters had already faced significant delays between Kara Bridge and Berger.
With the latest obstruction, motorists are now being advised to expect further delays while traffic officials work to clear the affected section.
