The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority has impounded 10 cows over alleged illegal open grazing in Ibadan.
The animals were seized in the Arola area of Apete following complaints from residents.
The authority disclosed the development in a statement signed by its Chairperson, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), on Tuesday.
Residents Raise Complaints
According to the authority, residents had complained about cattle being reared within the densely populated neighbourhood.
They also raised concerns about animal waste, noise and air pollution.
Following the complaints, enforcement officials visited the area with security operatives to investigate the situation.
The team reportedly found evidence supporting the residents’ allegations.
Eight Cows Seized
The enforcement team initially impounded eight cows at the location.
However, the operation did not end there.
While returning from the area, the officials reportedly saw two more cows tied down and grazing openly along the route.
The animals were also seized.
This brought the total number of impounded cows to 10.
Oyo Law Prohibits Open Grazing
The authority said the practice violated the Oyo State Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law, 2019.
The law was introduced to regulate livestock production and restrict activities that could create conflicts or threaten public safety.
OYRLEA said its action was not aimed at legitimate livestock owners.
Instead, the authority said it was enforcing the law and protecting residents from environmental, health and safety risks.
Authority Urges Residents to Report Violations
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the state’s anti-open grazing legislation.
It also urged residents to report suspected violations through the appropriate channels.
According to the authority, credible complaints will receive prompt attention.
The latest enforcement highlights the state’s continued efforts to prevent cattle from roaming freely in residential neighbourhoods and other restricted areas.
