President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Shettima disclosed the President’s decision in a post on his official X account on Sunday.
The Vice President has also departed for New York to represent Tinubu at the high-level UN gathering.
Governors, Ministers Join Delegation
The Nigerian delegation includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
Ministers and other senior government officials are also expected to participate in the programme.
Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate.
Nigeria’s Position at the UN
According to the information released on the delegation, Shettima’s engagements will cover issues of importance to Nigeria and Africa.
These include development, climate action, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.
The Vice President is also expected to participate in discussions surrounding the Right to Development and other high-level meetings.
UNGA General Debate Begins Tuesday
The 81st UN General Assembly session is being held in New York.
The General Debate will take place from September 22 to 26 and September 28, 2026, according to the United Nations.
This year’s theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
The UN programme also includes high-level meetings on the Right to Development, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness and the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
