Armed individuals have launched an attack on officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, seizing three packs of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). This troubling incident comes as the August 15 governorship election approaches, raising concerns about the security of electoral materials and the safety of election personnel amid increasing political activities across the state.

The assault unfolded at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, where INEC officials were distributing PVCs to registered voters. This has intensified worries regarding electoral security. On Sunday, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, confirmed that approximately ten armed individuals descended upon the distribution center, firing shots into the air and inciting panic among residents and election staff.

According to Ojelabi, the attackers compelled INEC officials to flee, allowing them to abscond with three packs of PVCs and temporarily disrupting the distribution process. The police spokesperson reported that the assailants fired shots into the air, prompting electoral officials to abandon their post. They then made off with the three packs of PVCs before escaping.

In response, Commissioner of Police CP Ibrahim Gotan condemned the attack and tasked law enforcement with a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. Ojelabi noted that tactical units and intelligence officers have been deployed in the area as efforts are underway to recover the stolen PVCs and prevent any breach of the upcoming governorship election’s integrity.

“Tactical and intelligence resources have been mobilized to catch the perpetrators and retrieve the stolen PVCs,” he affirmed.

The police reassured residents that comprehensive security measures are in place across Osun State to secure electoral activities before, during, and after the governorship election. The command also urged the public to remain calm, refrain from circulating unverified information, and support security agencies with credible intelligence that could aid ongoing investigations. Residents and eyewitnesses with pertinent information are encouraged to report to nearby police stations or contact the command through its emergency lines.

In a related situation, Ojelabi mentioned that police have restored peace in Ile-Ife after suspected thugs disrupted the Mayfair Garage area, briefly unsettling public order. He emphasized the command’s dedication to maintaining professionalism, neutrality, and protecting lives, property, and electoral materials throughout the election period, warning that those attempting to disrupt the electoral process or incite violence will face legal consequences.
