Armed bandits have reportedly attacked at least 10 communities in Zamfara State, forcing residents to flee their homes, while more than 40 people are feared to have been abducted during the coordinated assaults.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed the affected communities in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic among residents. Many villagers reportedly escaped into nearby forests and neighbouring communities to avoid being captured.
Witnesses said the bandits also looted food items, livestock, motorcycles, and other valuables before setting some houses ablaze, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
Community leaders disclosed that women, children, and elderly residents were among those feared kidnapped, while several others sustained injuries as they attempted to flee the attacks.
The latest incident has heightened fears over the deteriorating security situation in parts of Zamfara State, where armed groups have continued to carry out kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on rural communities despite ongoing military operations.
Security agencies have reportedly deployed troops and other personnel to the affected areas to restore order, pursue the attackers, and intensify search-and-rescue efforts for those abducted.
Residents have appealed to the Federal Government and security authorities to strengthen military presence in vulnerable communities, improve intelligence gathering, and take decisive action to end the recurring attacks.
The incident adds to the growing humanitarian concerns in Nigeria’s North-West, where thousands of people have been displaced by persistent banditry and insecurity.
