Betta Edu Appointment Raises Questions Over Tinubu’s Anti-Corruption Record

The appointment of former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu as Director of Women Mobilisation for the APC Presidential Campaign Council has sparked renewed debate over the Tinubu administration’s approach to accountability and anti-corruption.

Edu was suspended by President Bola Tinubu in January 2024 following allegations surrounding a directive for N585 million in public funds to be paid into a private bank account. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) subsequently investigated the matter.

Although Edu was questioned by the EFCC, the allegations against her have not resulted in a publicly reported criminal conviction.

Critics now argue that her appointment to a key position in the ruling party’s 2027 campaign sends the wrong message about accountability, particularly when the administration frequently presents the fight against corruption as a major priority.

The controversy also raises broader questions about the backgrounds of some political appointees.

Another frequently cited example is Abubakar Bagudu, who was appointed Minister of Budget and Economic Planning in 2023. Bagudu has previously been linked in US and Jersey legal proceedings to investigations concerning funds associated with the late military ruler Sani Abacha. He returned more than $160 million under a settlement in Jersey in 2003 and was not convicted in the United States over those allegations.

Supporters of the government may argue that past allegations or legal settlements do not automatically make an individual guilty of a crime. Critics, however, say political appointments should be subjected to the highest standards of transparency and public scrutiny.

The central question is therefore not simply whether individuals have been accused, investigated or previously involved in legal proceedings. It is whether government appointments demonstrate a consistent commitment to accountability.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the records and backgrounds of political appointees are likely to remain an important part of the national debate over corruption, governance and public trust.
