Military authorities in Chad have accused the Sudanese army of launching drone strikes against a convoy inside Chadian territory, raising fresh concerns that Sudan’s ongoing conflict could spill further across its borders.
According to Chadian authorities, the attack occurred on Thursday in East Ennedi province, more than 100 kilometres from the border with Sudan.
The alleged strike targeted vehicles travelling inside Chad, prompting concerns over a possible escalation of tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
Chad Places Forces on High Alert
Following the incident, Chad placed military units on high alert and warned the rival parties involved in Sudan’s conflict against violating its territory.
Chadian authorities said the country reserves the right to defend its territorial integrity if attacks or incursions continue.
The development comes as Sudan’s devastating war, which began in April 2023, continues to fuel instability across the region.
The conflict pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a struggle for control of the country.
Sudan Accuses Chad of Supporting RSF
Relations between Chad and Sudan have already been strained by accusations linked to the conflict.
Sudan has previously accused Chad of supporting the RSF, alleging that fighters and military supplies have been allowed to pass through Chadian territory.
Chad has denied accusations of involvement in the conflict and has repeatedly expressed concern about the humanitarian and security consequences of the war spilling across its borders.
Fears of Regional Escalation
The reported drone attack has raised concerns that the Sudanese conflict could increasingly threaten neighbouring countries.
Chad hosts large numbers of people who have fled the violence in Sudan, particularly from the Darfur region, placing additional pressure on its security and humanitarian systems.
Any repeated military activity inside Chadian territory could further strain relations between N’Djamena and Khartoum and increase the risk of a broader regional crisis.
Chadian authorities have therefore warned all parties involved in the Sudanese conflict to respect the country’s borders, while maintaining that its security forces are prepared to respond to any further violation of its territory.
