We are receiving stories from women in Afghanistan detailing their experiences under Taliban rule. Stay tuned as we share these narratives live.

A woman recounts that while in prison, she went through experiences so profound that she hasn’t even disclosed them to her mother.

Lyse Doucet of the BBC, reporting from Kabul, observes that stringent edicts by the Taliban are excluding women and girls from public life. A timeline outlines how life has changed since 2021.

In Kabul province, a dental assistant notes that survival has become the priority, while in the capital city, a jewelry maker expresses that her aspiration to be a pilot now feels out of reach.

In the meantime, Zuhal, once a journalist from Bamyan province, contemplates how her hopes and dreams abruptly shattered.

Many women we talk to choose not to disclose their real names because they fear potential backlash. Despite these obstacles, one woman stays optimistic. Although she cannot work as she once did, her passion and motivation remain strong.

She longs to rejoin the workforce, gain new knowledge, engage with society, and make her own life choices. She refuses to let her existence be limited by the four walls of her home.

She longs for her skills and talents to be appreciated again, desires to wake up with enthusiasm and readiness to pursue her passions, and wants assurance that her voice can make a meaningful contribution to society.

The past five years were more than just a chapter in her life; they symbolized lost youth, missed career opportunities, social experiences that never happened, and dreams left unrealized.

Nonetheless, she continues to be optimistic that her story is far from over. She believes that if women are given another opportunity, she can begin again.

The journey back might be challenging, and she may need to start over from the beginning, but she’s prepared to give it another shot.
