On Tuesday, passengers were left stranded at airports in Lagos and Abuja as a result of a strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, and the Trade Union Congress. These unions suspended flight operations to protest against domestic airlines over unresolved demands.
The strike caused widespread disruption to flight schedules as the unions advocated for matters such as worker unionization and the payment of mandatory fees to the aviation regulator.
In response, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) called on the unions to remain patient until Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, returns to tackle these issues.
Captain Chris Najomo, Director General of Civil Aviation, noted in a statement that last week’s meeting organized by the minister could have resolved these matters but was unattended by airline operators.
The NCAA assured passengers that flight safety remained intact and emphasized its dedication to overseeing safety responsibilities. “We urge all parties to engage in discussions. We are hopeful for a quick resolution and the prompt return of normal flight operations,” the statement said.
United Nigeria Airlines has temporarily halted its flights because of industrial action by unions, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew above all else. “Ensuring safety is our utmost concern. We have chosen to pause operations rather than jeopardize it,” the airline stated.
They expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured travelers that they are closely monitoring the situation with intentions to resume regular services as soon as stability returns. Passengers impacted by this suspension are encouraged to reach out to customer care for additional support.
Air Peace reported similar disruptions due to picketing at the terminals in Lagos and Abuja. The blockade restricted access to departure areas, heavily affecting flights from these locations. Air Peace apologized for any inconvenience caused, emphasizing that these issues were out of their hands.
Passengers are being updated as the situation evolves, with the airline diligently overseeing events and delivering necessary updates. They expressed gratitude for passengers’ patience and understanding during this difficult period.
