Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, South African police confirmed on Monday.
Tete was shot dead last week in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, after armed men reportedly ambushed him outside his home.
According to police, the former champion was sitting in his vehicle and waiting for the gate to his residence to open when two armed suspects approached and opened fire.
The attackers were reportedly wearing balaclavas during the shooting.
A woman who was inside the vehicle with Tete was also injured in the attack. She was subsequently taken to hospital, where she remains under medical care.
Four Suspects Arrested
South African police said four suspects have now been arrested in connection with the murder.
One of the suspects, who was arrested two days before Monday, was expected to appear in court on Monday. The remaining three suspects are expected to appear before a court at a later date.
Police have not yet disclosed the possible motive for the killing or the identities of the suspects.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the ambush and determine the roles allegedly played by those arrested.
Tete’s Boxing Legacy
Tete was a highly respected figure in South African boxing and enjoyed a successful international career.
He won the World Boxing Federation flyweight title in 2007, holding the belt until 2008.
A decade later, he captured the World Boxing Organization bantamweight title in 2017 and successfully held the championship again in 2019.
His death has sparked shock among boxing fans and members of the sporting community, particularly in South Africa.
The police investigation is continuing, with authorities expected to provide further information as the suspects face court proceedings.
