Former Democratic Republic of Congo president Joseph Kabila has challenged US sanctions against him, asking a federal court in Washington to remove his name from the US Treasury’s blacklist.

Kabila, who ruled the DRC from 2001 to 2019, filed the legal challenge after the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned him in April over allegations that he provided financial and political support to the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel movement.

Kabila Denies US Allegations

Washington has accused Kabila of supporting M23 and its political activities as the armed group expanded its control over parts of eastern Congo.

Kabila disputes the allegations, arguing that the US government has not identified specific evidence showing that he transferred money to M23 or provided political incentives to the rebels.

His legal challenge seeks to have the sanctions designation overturned, contending that the allegations against him are not sufficiently supported.

Death Sentence in Congo

Kabila’s legal battle in the United States comes as he also faces serious legal consequences in his home country.

A Congolese military court has sentenced the former president to death in absentia on treason and other charges connected to his alleged role in the conflict involving M23.

Kabila had spent years outside the country before returning to eastern Congo last year, months after Goma was captured by M23 forces.

Conflict Continues Despite Peace Deal

The dispute comes amid continued instability in eastern DRC.

Although Kinshasa and Kigali have reached a peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict, violence has continued in parts of eastern Congo, with both sides accusing each other of violating the agreement.

The US sanctions and Kabila’s court challenge add another layer to the increasingly complex political and security crisis surrounding eastern Congo, where the M23 conflict has displaced large numbers of civilians and drawn regional and international attention.
