The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has officially ended the services of his long-serving personal lawyer, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor. He has instructed Ejiofor to immediately cease representing himself as Kanu’s legal counsel or speaking on behalf of his family or the IPOB movement.
In a letter dated July 22, 2026, reportedly from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu affirmed that he had previously notified Ejiofor verbally of the termination of his role, with this letter serving as a formal written confirmation.
Kanu’s letter revoked all authority previously given to Ejiofor to act or speak on his behalf, his family’s, or IPOB’s. He also directed the lawyer to stop presenting himself publicly as his representative in any legal or official capacities.
Kanu explained that his decision adheres to the IPOB Code of Conduct, which states that only the organization’s leader has the power to appoint or dismiss key officials and representatives unless formally delegated to others.
This development adds a new dimension to Kanu’s legal affairs amid months of speculation about changes to his defense team. While Ejiofor and his legal office had not issued a formal response at the time of this report, the decision is expected to spark further discussion about the future direction of Kanu’s legal representation.
Kanu, who remains detained at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, continues to play a pivotal role in the activities of IPOB, which advocates for an independent Biafra.
