Khartoum Curfew Lifted After Two Years as Sudan War Continues

Sudanese authorities have lifted a two-year night-time curfew and ended the state of emergency in the capital, Khartoum, in a move aimed at allowing residents to move and conduct their businesses around the clock.

The decision was announced by the Security Affairs Coordination Committee following a meeting chaired by Khartoum Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza.

Despite the lifting of the curfew, however, security restrictions remain in place across the capital.

Army patrols and security checkpoints will continue operating in various parts of Khartoum, while residents travelling at night have been advised to carry valid identification documents.

Restrictions on Foreign Nationals

Authorities have also introduced restrictions on the entry of foreign nationals into Khartoum State.

Foreigners will not be permitted to enter the state by public or private transportation, including trains and buses, unless they possess valid visas or other required permits.

The authorities said the measures are part of continued efforts to maintain security as the country remains embroiled in a devastating conflict.

Curfew Introduced During Intensified Fighting

The night-time curfew was introduced in May 2024 as fighting intensified between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The broader conflict began in April 2023 following a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF.

The war has caused a major humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of people killed and around 13 million forced to flee their homes, according to UN and international estimates.

The lifting of the curfew marks a significant easing of restrictions in Khartoum, but the continued military presence and movement controls highlight the fragile security situation in the Sudanese capital.
