Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has criticized remarks allegedly made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Jingir regarding Christians. He emphasized that the people of Kano State do not endorse statements that could foster religious division.

Kwankwaso expressed his position in a statement released on Monday, August 10, 2026. This followed comments allegedly made by the cleric during an event held over the weekend in Kano.

The former governor voiced concern about remarks that might escalate religious tensions in a nation where Muslims and Christians have managed to coexist and collaborate despite facing occasional disagreements and security challenges.

The report states that Kwankwaso dismissed divisive rhetoric and emphasized the significance of peaceful coexistence among individuals of various faiths.

Kwankwaso Advocates for Interfaith Harmony

Kwankwaso’s response arises in the context of rekindled public dialogue about religious relations in northern Nigeria and the duty of political and religious leaders to foster peace.

The former governor allegedly asserted that the people of Kano should not be associated with remarks that might foster hostility between Muslims and Christians.

He also stressed the importance of leaders and influential figures being cautious when publicly addressing sensitive religious topics.

Comments from Sheikh Jingir Elicit Reactions

The controversy stemmed from statements reportedly made by Sheikh Jingir at an event in Kano over the weekend.

The comments sparked concern and elicited reactions from various groups, with Kwankwaso being one of the notable individuals to openly disassociate himself from these statements.

The former governor’s involvement underscores the delicate nature of religious matters in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically and religiously significant states.

Appeal for Unity in Kano

Kwankwaso’s statement arises amidst ongoing appeals for harmonious coexistence between Christians and Muslims throughout Nigeria.

Religious and political leaders have consistently called on Nigerians to refrain from making comments that might exacerbate current divides or incite animosity among communities.

In Kano, where religion plays a significant role in social and political spheres, the public often pays close attention to statements made by notable clerics and politicians.

Kwankwaso’s latest remarks highlight the importance of unity and mutual respect, instead of rhetoric that might further divide communities.

Religious Tensions in Nigeria

Nigeria is a country rich in religious diversity, featuring significant Muslim and Christian communities distributed throughout various regions.

Despite coexisting for generations, the two faith communities have sometimes faced mistrust and conflict due to religious disagreements, political tensions, and insecurity.

In this context, the demand for responsible communication from political, traditional, and religious leaders remains crucial, especially when dealing with sensitive matters related to faith.

Kwankwaso’s criticism of the statements linked to Sheikh Jingir is likely to intensify discussions on how influential figures contribute to maintaining religious harmony.

According to reports, the former governor believes that Kano residents should avoid making divisive statements and prioritize peaceful coexistence.

As responses continue to unfold, the spotlight is likely to stay on the broader discussion surrounding religious tolerance, responsible leadership, and unity in Kano and throughout Nigeria.
