More Than 350 Dead in Nepal-Tibet Floods as Authorities Warn of Another Flood

A resident walks along a street covered in mud following flash floods and a landslide disaster in Devighat, in Nepal's Nuwakot district on August 26, 2026. A massive flood and landslide disaster on the Nepal-Tibet border killed at least 103 people on August 26, 2026 and left several hundred missing, many of them foreign tourists. Aid workers said entire settlements had been "wiped out". Some 403 tourists -- 341 of them foreigners -- were unaccounted for several hours after the disaster struck, according to the tourism ministry. (Photo by PRAKASH MATHEMA / AFP)

Rescuers are searching for survivors after a devastating flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border destroyed homes, swept away bridges and roads, and left hundreds of people missing.

At least 359 people have died in Nepal, while more than 900 remain missing, according to the latest reports. In Tibet, at least three people have been confirmed dead and another 558 are reportedly missing, although it is unclear whether the figures overlap with Nepal’s numbers.

The US Geological Survey said the disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse and debris flow, rather than an earthquake as initially suspected. The sudden release of water and debris caused severe flooding downstream.

Authorities are now facing concerns over a possible second disaster. A lake formed by rising water near the China-Nepal border is reportedly increasing the risk of another major flood if its banks are breached.

Hundreds of foreign nationals are also reportedly missing. Nepalese authorities said those missing include tourists from India, Nepal, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The disaster has also affected security personnel, with dozens of Nepalese army and police officers reportedly among those missing.

Rescue teams are working in difficult conditions as damaged roads and bridges complicate access to affected communities. Authorities and international partners are expected to intensify relief and search operations as concerns grow over further flooding.

The disaster has highlighted the dangers posed by glacial instability and extreme flooding in the Himalayan region, while emergency agencies continue efforts to locate missing people and protect communities at risk.
