Passengers travelling through Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been hit by significant delays following the resumption of industrial action by airport employees and air traffic controllers.
The workers began another strike on Sunday after negotiations over several outstanding labour concerns failed to produce an agreement.
Among the issues raised by the workers are unpaid salaries, concerns about job security and complaints about working conditions.
The latest industrial action has created disruption for both departing and arriving passengers, with some flights pushed back by several hours.
One international student, Nicole Jepkorir, described the experience as frustrating after her scheduled 4 p.m. departure was reportedly moved to around midnight.
She said the disruption had created considerable inconvenience for travellers trying to continue their journeys.
Airport authorities respond
The Kenya Airports Authority said efforts were underway to reduce the impact of the strike and keep airport operations moving as much as possible.
However, travellers continued to encounter long waiting times and changes to their flight schedules.
The dispute is not entirely new. Kenyan airport workers have previously taken industrial action over labour-related concerns, with an earlier dispute temporarily brought under control following government intervention.
Government and union talks continue
Negotiations between representatives of the workers and government officials were expected to continue on Monday after discussions on Sunday failed to produce a settlement.
The outcome of those talks could determine whether normal operations return quickly or further disruption occurs at one of Kenya’s busiest aviation hubs.
Passengers have been advised to check directly with their airlines before travelling to the airport so they can confirm the latest departure information.
For now, travellers using Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are being urged to prepare for possible delays as efforts continue to resolve the labour dispute.
