Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Babatunde Badejo-Okusanya has pledged to champion far-reaching electoral reforms within the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) amid growing controversy surrounding the association’s recent leadership election.

Speaking in the wake of concerns raised by members over the electoral process, Badejo-Okusanya acknowledged the need to strengthen confidence in the NBA’s internal democratic system, promising to support measures that would make future elections more transparent, credible, and inclusive.

He stressed that the controversy should serve as an opportunity for the association to review its electoral framework and address issues that have generated dissatisfaction among members.

“The NBA must emerge stronger from this process. We owe our members an electoral system that inspires confidence, guarantees fairness, and reflects the highest standards of integrity,” he said.

Badejo-Okusanya also called on aggrieved members to pursue lawful and constitutional avenues in resolving disputes, emphasizing the importance of preserving the unity and professional reputation of the legal body.

The NBA election has attracted widespread attention following allegations and counter-allegations over the conduct of the poll, with some contestants and stakeholders demanding greater transparency and accountability from the electoral committee.

Legal practitioners have argued that the association’s credibility depends on its ability to conduct elections that are free, fair, and beyond reproach, given its role as a leading advocate for the rule of law and democratic governance in Nigeria.

Observers say the controversy has reignited discussions about the need to improve the NBA’s electronic voting system, voter verification procedures, dispute resolution mechanisms, and oversight of future elections.

As debates continue within the legal community, Badejo-Okusanya reaffirmed his commitment to institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the association’s governance and restoring members’ confidence in its electoral process.
