Nightlife Flourishes in Conservative Sokoto Despite Religious Traditions

Multicoloured lights flash across a nightclub in Sokoto as revellers dance, drink and sing along to Afrobeats, offering a striking contrast to the deeply conservative image of the northwestern Nigerian state.

Sokoto, regarded as the historical “Seat of the Caliphate” and an important spiritual centre of Islam in Nigeria, has strict religious traditions and moral codes. Yet, beneath the surface, a small but growing nightlife scene is quietly attracting residents and entertainment lovers.

Benjamin Danjuma, a regular reveller, said nightlife has become a familiar part of his weekend routine.

“Every Friday, every Sunday, I go to club. We even have Ladies’ Night in this town. We have Old School on Saturday, and we also have karaoke night in Sokoto here,” he said.

According to Danjuma, residents can find many of the same forms of entertainment available in larger Nigerian cities.

“The way lifestyle normally goes outside there, that’s how we run it in this town. We are not left behind. Everything that is happening, we are doing it here in this town,” he added.

Hisbah Keeps Watch

The emergence of nightlife in Sokoto comes despite the activities of the Hisbah Force, the state’s Islamic morality enforcement body.

Hisbah personnel regularly patrol Sokoto and other parts of the state, enforcing public morality and local laws, including restrictions relating to alcohol consumption and dress.

Usman Abdullahi Jatau, commander of the Sokoto Hisbah, said the organisation’s mandate covers both Muslims and non-Muslims.

“We attend to every citizen, be him or her a Muslim or non-Muslim, and we do justice to everyone. Ours is to see how we can uphold, how we can promote good morals and virtues within and outside the state,” he said.

Despite the presence of the morality police, some partygoers say they are not discouraged from enjoying the city’s nightlife.

Entertainment Amid Insecurity

Sokoto is also among the northern states affected by attacks from jihadist groups and other armed organisations, creating significant security challenges for residents.

Oluwamayowa Idowu, founder of Lagos-based culture publication Culture Custodian, said nightlife provides an escape for people dealing with the pressures of everyday life.

“A large part of nightlife is escapism, and you want to have an experience that takes you away from your day-to-day life,” he said.

According to Idowu, insecurity has severely affected nightlife across northern Nigeria, but residents still want opportunities to relax and socialise.

“The north has been ravaged by insecurity, but the people who live there still want to go out and have some fun,” he said.

He added that nightlife could expand significantly if security conditions improve, although religious traditions would likely continue to influence the sector.

“If we take out insecurity from northern Nigeria, I think the nightlife culture would be bigger than what it is. But I do think it will still be limited by the religious undertone that is common in the region,” Idowu said.

Sokoto’s Changing Social Scene

Ibrahim Nuhu, a banker who moved to Sokoto from Jos about 25 years ago, said he has witnessed a significant transformation in the city’s entertainment scene.

Having initially worried about leaving behind the more cosmopolitan lifestyle of Jos, Nuhu said he eventually became comfortable with life in Sokoto and embraced its growing weekend entertainment culture.

“When I entered Sokoto, I saw that life is easy. I always go out, even on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, just to go and have some fun with my friends,” he said.

While Sokoto remains deeply rooted in Islamic traditions, its emerging nightlife scene suggests that entertainment and social activities continue to evolve alongside the state’s religious identity.
