Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, has expressed confidence that a joint presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso would offer the strongest chance for success in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
In an interview with Symfoni TV, Lawal argued that an alliance between the former Labour Party presidential candidate and the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) would form a formidable political force, capable of outpacing other major contenders in the presidential race.
According to Lawal, both Obi and Kwankwaso enjoy considerable political support across different regions of the country, and a united ticket would effectively consolidate their electoral strengths.
Pairing Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, he suggested, would create the best opportunity for success, estimating a 70 percent chance of winning the 2027 election. He assessed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with a 50 percent chance, while giving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar minimal prospects of victory.
Lawal described Obi as a leader committed to governing equitably and in the interests of all Nigerians if elected. He emphasized that Nigeria needs leadership focused on justice, accountability, national unity, and economic recovery.
These remarks come at a time of increasing political consultations and coalition discussions among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections. Many political leaders continue to advocate for strategic alliances to present a stronger challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Discussions about a potential Obi-Kwankwaso alliance have gained traction in recent months, although neither politician has officially announced a joint presidential ticket or confirmed any power-sharing arrangement for the election.
