Osun Victory: Watch Moment Obasanjo Surprised Adeleke With Visit [VIDEO]

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a surprise congratulatory visit to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Sunday, following the governor’s victory in the August 15 governorship election.

The visit came hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally declared Adeleke the winner of the closely contested race, with the State Returning Officer, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, announcing the result at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday.

A video that quickly went viral showed the moment Obasanjo arrived, reportedly catching Adeleke off guard and prompting the governor to break into spontaneous dancing and praise-singing at the sight of the former president. The encounter offered a light, celebratory moment after a hard-fought campaign, with Obasanjo congratulating Adeleke on securing another four-year term and the governor expressing his appreciation for the visit.

Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, polled 511,067 votes to defeat APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who recorded 444,815 votes — a winning margin of 66,252 votes. The governor carried 19 of Osun’s 30 Local Government Areas, while Oyebamiji won 11. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress finished a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former military Head of State and later a democratically elected president, remains one of the country’s most influential elder statesmen, and his personal visit added a notable dimension to the wave of congratulatory messages that followed Adeleke’s win — including calls from President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, among other political leaders across the country.

The visit comes as Adeleke prepares to begin a second term in office, having secured a fresh mandate from the people of Osun State.
