The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordered officers to implement a “shoot-at-sight” policy against those carrying illegal firearms.
The statement clarifying this was released by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who labeled the reports as misleading and a gross distortion of the IGP’s directive.
Adejobi clarified that the Inspector-General did not instruct officers to shoot individuals simply for carrying illegal firearms. Instead, he stated that the IGP highlighted the right of officers to protect themselves and innocent civilians when confronted by armed criminals posing an immediate threat to life.
Adejobi emphasized that the order was focused on bolstering efforts against violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, cultism, and other offenses involving illegal firearm use.
He stressed that officers are trained to use force only when it is lawful, necessary, and proportionate to the threat. He noted that every police operation must align with the Constitution, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, the Nigeria Police Act, and international human rights standards.
The Force PRO urged media organizations and the public to refrain from spreading inaccurate reports that could incite unwarranted fear or misinterpretation regarding police actions.
He reassured that the Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians while upholding the fundamental rights of every citizen.
This clarification came in response to widespread media coverage suggesting the IGP had instructed officers to “shoot anyone with illegal firearms,” prompting public concern. The police affirmed that the actual directive was for officers to take lawful and decisive measures against armed criminals threatening public safety, not to resort to indiscriminate force.
The Force further appealed to Nigerians for continued support in providing credible intelligence on criminal activities, assuring that the police will remain professional, accountable, and guided by the rule of law in fulfilling their constitutional duties.
