The Government of Senegal has officially endorsed former President Macky Sall as its candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, marking a significant step in the country’s effort to secure one of the world’s most influential diplomatic offices.

The endorsement was announced by Senegalese authorities, who described Sall as an experienced statesman with a strong record in governance, regional diplomacy, and international cooperation. Officials said his leadership credentials and global engagement make him well-qualified to lead the United Nations at a time of increasing geopolitical tensions and global challenges.

Macky Sall served as President of Senegal from 2012 to 2024, during which he played prominent roles in regional and continental affairs. He also chaired the African Union, where he advocated for stronger international partnerships, economic development, peace, and security across Africa.

The Senegalese government expressed confidence that Sall’s experience in conflict resolution, sustainable development, and multilateral diplomacy would enable him to provide effective leadership for the UN.

His endorsement is expected to attract attention from member states as consultations begin over the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. Under UN procedures, the Secretary-General is appointed by the United Nations General Assembly upon the recommendation of the United Nations Security Council, where the five permanent members hold veto power.

Political analysts say Sall’s candidacy could receive significant backing from African nations seeking greater representation in global leadership positions. However, they note that the selection process is highly competitive and depends on broad international consensus among UN member states.

The race for the UN’s top office is expected to intensify in the coming months as countries consider potential candidates and engage in diplomatic consultations ahead of the formal appointment process.
