Cameroon’s women’s national football team returned home to a hero’s welcome on Monday after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a commanding 3–0 victory over tournament debutants Malawi.
Hundreds of enthusiastic supporters gathered outside Yaoundé International Airport to welcome the newly crowned champions, with fans singing and celebrating the team’s historic achievement.
The celebrations continued as the Indomitable Lionesses paraded through the streets of Yaoundé, where men, women and children lined the roads to cheer the players and celebrate their victory.
For many supporters, the triumph represented more than football, with fans highlighting the achievement as an inspiration for Cameroonian women and girls.
The WAFCON final was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who participated in the medal ceremony alongside other football officials.
Algeria defeated hosts Morocco in the third-place play-off on Saturday.
Cameroon forward Monique Ngock was also recognised as the tournament’s Player of the Tournament.
