President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major expansion of the Nigerian Army, authorising the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture and improve the military’s operational capacity.

The approval marks one of the largest recruitment drives in recent years and comes amid growing security challenges across various parts of the country, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, kidnapping, violent crimes, and communal conflicts.

The expansion is expected to significantly boost troop strength, improve the Army’s ability to respond to emerging threats, and enhance internal security operations nationwide.

Strengthening National Security

The recruitment initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to reinforcing Nigeria’s armed forces with additional manpower, modern capabilities, and improved readiness.

Military analysts believe the increased personnel will enable the Nigerian Army to:

  • Intensify counter-terrorism operations.
  • Strengthen border security.
  • Improve protection of critical national infrastructure.
  • Enhance peacekeeping and internal security missions.
  • Support other security agencies in tackling criminal activities.

The expansion also aligns with the government’s broader security reform agenda aimed at restoring peace and stability across the country.

Economic Opportunities for Nigerian Youths

Beyond security, the recruitment exercise is expected to create employment opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians seeking careers in the military.

Successful recruits will undergo comprehensive military training before deployment to various formations across the country.

The exercise is also expected to inject fresh talent into specialised units such as:

  • Infantry
  • Engineering Corps
  • Intelligence
  • Medical Services
  • Communications
  • Logistics
  • Cyber Operations

Modernising the Nigerian Army

Security experts have noted that increasing troop numbers alone will not be sufficient unless accompanied by continued investment in modern military equipment, intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, and improved welfare for personnel.

Recent government efforts have focused on acquiring advanced military hardware, enhancing training programmes, and improving the welfare of officers and soldiers to boost morale and operational effectiveness.

Recruitment Process

The Nigerian Army is expected to announce detailed guidelines for the recruitment exercise through its official communication channels.

Interested applicants are advised to:

  • Monitor official recruitment announcements.
  • Ensure they meet all eligibility requirements.
  • Avoid fraudulent recruitment agents demanding payment, as Nigerian Army recruitment is conducted free of charge.

Applicants will be required to satisfy educational, medical, and physical fitness standards before progressing through the selection process.

Renewed Commitment to National Defence

President Tinubu’s approval of the 28,000-man recruitment underscores his administration’s determination to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities and improve the nation’s ability to combat evolving security threats.

With additional personnel expected to reinforce ongoing military operations across the country, the initiative is anticipated to enhance national security, protect lives and property, and support long-term peace and stability.

The recruitment exercise is expected to commence following the release of official schedules and implementation guidelines by the Nigerian Army.
