Tinubu Will Pursue Third Term if God Spares Him — Babachir Lawal

Babachir David Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, recently suggested that if given the opportunity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu might pursue a third term if he maintains political influence.

Lawal shared these thoughts during a media interview focused on Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 general election approaches. He implied that the President might be reluctant to step down after a second term, should conditions permit it.

He emphasized that Nigerians should prioritize keeping a check on political power concentration and safeguarding the country’s constitutional democracy.

These comments come as political activities intensify and consultations ramp up ahead of the 2027 elections. Opposition parties are actively forming alliances to challenge the currently ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), a president can serve only two four-year terms. Any attempt to extend this term limit would necessitate significant constitutional amendments, which are not allowed under the existing law.

The Presidency has not yet issued an official response to Lawal’s statement, and there is no indication or announcement from President Tinubu suggesting an interest in pursuing a third term.

Political analysts believe that Lawal’s remarks could spark discussions within Nigeria’s political sphere as preparations for the 2027 elections progress.

As political realignment gains traction, observers anticipate more exchanges between leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties in the lead-up to the next general election.
