Seven people have died after a helicopter carrying six tourists and a pilot crashed near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County, central Kenya.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said the accident occurred at about 9:13 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
The aircraft, identified as a Eurocopter EC130 B4, was reportedly conducting a sightseeing flight from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy towards the Ewaso Nyiro area when it went down.
Investigation Underway
The KCAA said it was coordinating the emergency response, while Kenya’s Transport Ministry and the Air Accident Investigations Department are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Authorities have yet to release the names or nationalities of the victims.
The difficult terrain around the crash site has complicated rescue and recovery efforts. The Kenya Red Cross said drones were being deployed to survey the area and assist teams in assessing the situation.
Images shared online appeared to show smoke rising from the crash site near Mount Ololokwe.
Tragedy Strikes Kenya’s Tourism Sector
Samburu is one of Kenya’s major tourism destinations, attracting visitors from around the world with its wildlife conservancies, scenic landscapes and safari experiences.
The crash is the latest in a series of fatal helicopter accidents recorded in Kenya in recent years.
In February, six people, including a member of parliament, were killed in a helicopter crash in Nandi County.
Kenya’s military also suffered a major aviation tragedy in April 2024 when Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Omondi Ogolla and nine other people were killed after an army helicopter crashed in western Kenya. Two people survived the accident.
Another military helicopter crash near Nairobi in June 2021 killed at least 10 soldiers.
Authorities are expected to release further details as investigators gain access to the crash site and establish what caused Wednesday’s accident.
