Troops of the Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, have dismantled suspected strongholds of IPOB/ESN elements in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, recovering weapons and materials believed to be used in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices.
The operation was conducted on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in collaboration with the Maritime Component, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Anambra Vigilante Group.
Troops Launch Dawn Offensive
According to the military, the security forces launched a coordinated dawn operation on identified locations at Obene and Abator villages, within the Ochuche and Umunankwo communities.
The troops reportedly came under fire after entering the identified locations, prompting them to respond and pursue the fleeing suspects.
Blood stains were reportedly found along the withdrawal route, suggesting that some of the fleeing fighters may have sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.
During the operation, troops reportedly neutralised one suspected member of the group, while another fleeing member escaped with the body of a second person who had also been neutralised.
Weapons and IED Materials Recovered
Security personnel subsequently conducted a thorough search of the abandoned strongholds.
The operation led to the recovery of:
- Two pump-action guns
- Two motorcycles
- Improvised explosive device-making materials
- Other assorted items
The recovery of the IED-making materials was described as a significant operational success, as such materials could potentially be used to manufacture explosives targeting security personnel, infrastructure and civilians.
Troops Prevent Regrouping
Following the operation, troops consolidated their positions and expanded their search of surrounding areas in an effort to locate fleeing members and prevent the group from regrouping elsewhere.
The military said the operation was part of continuing efforts by Operation UDO KA and other security agencies to disrupt armed groups and criminal networks operating across South-East Nigeria.
The Nigerian Army said security operations would continue to target suspected safe havens, weapons networks and other facilities used by criminal elements.
The military also reaffirmed its commitment to working with other security agencies to improve security and create a safer environment for law-abiding residents and communities across the region.
