US President Donald Trump has accused Canada of seeking the benefits of being part of the United States without becoming a state, as tensions between the two countries intensify following the collapse of trade negotiations.
Trump made the comments after talks between Washington and Ottawa broke down late Friday, triggering new 50% US tariffs on a range of Canadian goods.
“Canada wants the benefits of a State, without being one,” Trump said, repeating his long-running remarks about Canada potentially becoming the 51st US state.
Carney Calls Tariffs a ‘Miscalculation’
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sharply rejected the US position, describing the new tariffs as a “miscalculation” intended to hurt and divide Canada.
Carney said Canada would respond by matching the US tariffs “dollar-for-dollar” from September 8, including measures affecting products such as steel, dairy, appliances and electronics.
The Canadian prime minister described the situation as a trade war.
“They asked too much and they offered too little,” Carney said. “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.”
Trump later criticised Canada’s decision to retaliate, telling Fox News that Canadians were “foolish” to enter a trade war with the United States while believing they could win.
Trade Talks Collapse
The two countries had appeared optimistic about reaching a deal earlier in the week, but negotiations eventually collapsed after both sides accused the other of making last-minute changes to proposed terms.
Carney said Canada could not accept the US demands.
“We cannot accept what they’ve offered, and we will not give what they’ve asked,” he said.
The breakdown threatens to disrupt one of the world’s most deeply integrated trading relationships, with businesses on both sides facing increased costs and uncertainty.
New US Tariffs Take Effect
The latest 50% tariffs will apply to a range of Canadian products in addition to existing US duties on Canadian steel, aluminium, automobiles and lumber.
The new measures are relatively limited in scope, covering around $20 billion (C$28 billion) worth of Canadian imports, or roughly 5% of Canada’s exports to the United States.
Affected products include wine, dairy products, cement, clothing and hockey equipment, among others.
Carney said Canada was retaliating reluctantly in an effort to protect its economic interests, with further details of the countermeasures expected to be announced.
Wider Economic Concerns
Tariffs have become a major component of Trump’s trade policy, with the US president arguing that import taxes can encourage domestic manufacturing and protect American jobs.
Critics, however, have warned that tariffs can increase costs for consumers and businesses while disrupting international trade.
With negotiations now suspended and both countries preparing retaliatory measures, businesses and consumers on both sides of the border face growing uncertainty over the future of US-Canada trade relations.
