Residents of the Tunisian coastal town of Ben Guerdane have gathered for the funerals of eight young migrants who drowned after a boat carrying people attempting to cross the Mediterranean sank on Friday.
The victims were reportedly among 15 people who left Tunisia in a small vessel, hoping to reach Europe in search of better economic opportunities. Only one person has so far been found alive.
The survivor reportedly told rescuers that he had spent about 48 hours adrift before being rescued by a commercial vessel.
The boat reportedly departed on Thursday morning from an area between Zarzis and Ben Guerdane, heading towards the Italian island of Lampedusa, located about 145 kilometres away.
At the funerals, residents expressed grief over the loss of young lives and frustration over the economic conditions they say are pushing people to risk dangerous sea journeys.
Ali Eknis, a resident of Zarzis, said the victims had dreamed of a better future but were forced to take an extremely dangerous route.
The deaths have sparked protests and renewed calls for authorities to address unemployment and economic hardship in Ben Guerdane and surrounding areas.
Residents called for greater government investment, public projects and measures to support the private sector and create permanent employment opportunities.
Noureddine Chafai, a resident of Ben Guerdane, said residents were tired of promises and wanted concrete action to improve economic conditions.
The tragedy comes as the Mediterranean continues to witness deadly migrant crossings. The International Organization for Migration has described the central Mediterranean route as the world’s deadliest migration route.
The agency said earlier in 2026 that at least 914 migrants had died or gone missing along the route during the first four months of the year, more than double the figure recorded during the same period in 2025.
The latest deaths have once again highlighted the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean and the economic pressures driving many young people to undertake perilous journeys.
