Ugandan authorities have announced that investigations involving former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among have been dropped, following months of controversy over alleged corruption.
Among was reportedly confined to her home in Kampala in May after a corruption probe, during which her Rolls-Royce was confiscated.
Uganda’s military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced on social media that President Yoweri Museveni had instructed him to release Among from house arrest.
“We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” Kainerugaba said, referring to Among by her initials.
However, Uganda’s anti-corruption body said it had never publicly stated that it was investigating the former Speaker.
Among became Speaker of Parliament in March 2022 and was regarded as a prominent figure within Museveni’s political circle.
She has faced corruption allegations for several years and was previously subjected to sanctions by both the United Kingdom and the United States.
The latest development has renewed debate over accountability, political influence and the role of the military in Uganda’s governance.
The allegations against Among remain allegations and have not been established in court.
