Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, describing him as overhyped and overrated ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Onanuga made the remarks on Saturday while questioning Obi’s suitability for the presidency.
In a post on X, the presidential aide accused the former governor of lacking the governance experience required to lead Nigeria at the national level.
He also described Obi’s administration in Anambra State as a failure.
Onanuga Questions Obi’s Leadership Record
According to Onanuga, Obi’s supporters have created an image of him as a leader capable of transforming Nigeria.
He, however, argued that governing a country cannot be based on expectations of a miracle.
“Peter Obi is simply overhyped and overrated. The guy is clueless. As Anambra governor, he was a spectacular failure,” Onanuga wrote.
He further questioned what he described as Obi’s lack of a strong governance record.
“Governance is not by magic,” he said.
‘Governance Pedigree Is Important’
Onanuga argued that anyone seeking the presidency should have a clear record of governance and leadership.
“A wannabe national leader must have a governance pedigree, which Peter lacks,” he stated.
He also accused Obi of frequently changing his political positions.
According to the presidential aide, Obi’s political worldview is heavily influenced by his supporters on social media.
The comments come as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi remains one of the prominent opposition figures whose political activities are being closely watched ahead of the election.
Onanuga’s comments have added to the growing political debate over the records, policies and leadership credentials of potential presidential contenders.
