The Nigeria Police Force and the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, have intensified efforts to prevent political tensions from escalating as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.

The moves followed a series of controversial statements allegedly made by political actors in different parts of the country, raising concerns among stakeholders about the possibility of intimidation, violence and inflammatory rhetoric during the election season.

The police are investigating remarks attributed to Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba; Kuje Area Council Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Shekwolo; and Senator Francis Fadahunsi of Osun East.

At the same time, the National Peace Committee has strengthened its monitoring mechanisms by activating a situation room and an Electoral Offences Tracking System.

The platforms are expected to monitor campaign activities, possible violations of political agreements and other developments capable of threatening the credibility and peaceful conduct of the 2027 elections.

Kuje controversy raises concern

The renewed focus on political rhetoric followed a controversial statement attributed to Shekwolo.

In a video that circulated widely on social media, the Kuje council chairman was heard warning residents who did not support the All Progressives Congress to leave the area council.

The statement generated criticism, particularly because it came ahead of the 2027 election season.

The controversy was followed days later by reports of an attack on an Accord Party political gathering in Kuje.

According to reports, suspected thugs carrying cutlasses disrupted the gathering, chased participants away and damaged campaign materials and furniture. At least one person was reportedly injured.

Senator Fadahunsi also under scrutiny

Senator Francis Fadahunsi has similarly faced criticism following remarks contained in another viral video.

The APC senator was reportedly addressing supporters during a protest at the palace of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland over alleged killings involving members of his party.

During the gathering, Fadahunsi was accused of making threatening comments directed at members of the Accord Party.

His remarks came shortly after three people were reportedly killed in a shooting in the Imo area of Ilesa.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remained disputed, however, and the senator’s comments have since become part of the wider debate over political rhetoric and security ahead of future elections.

Borno official faces criticism

Buba, the Borno commissioner, has also attracted public attention over comments reportedly warning residents who refuse to support the APC during the 2027 election.

He was accused of threatening to flog opponents and cut off their fingers, remarks that have triggered calls for scrutiny.

The latest actions by the police and National Peace Committee underline growing concern that inflammatory statements could contribute to political violence if left unchecked.

With political parties already stepping up mobilisation, stakeholders are expected to face increasing pressure to ensure that competition for political office does not degenerate into intimidation or violence.
