More than three decades after Agbara Nla became one of the most memorable titles in Nigeria’s Christian film tradition, the iconic story is set to return to cinemas in a new production titled Agbara Nla: The Return.

The film, which has already released its official trailer, is scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on October 1, 2026.

Co-created and directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua “Jay_Mikee” Mike-Bamiloye, the new production revisits the spiritual battle surrounding Abule Muwonleru, a village once caught in a conflict between the forces of light and darkness.

For viewers who encountered the original production in the 1990s, the new movie represents more than a cinema release. It is a return to a story that became deeply associated with childhood memories, faith and some of the most frightening characters in Nigerian Christian television.

A Story That Left Its Mark

The original Agbara Nla, written by Evangelist Mike Bamiloye, was released in 1993 at a time when television and home video played a major role in shaping Nigerian popular culture.

Its themes of faith, spiritual warfare and the struggle between good and evil connected strongly with Christian audiences.

Some of its characters, particularly Isawuru and Ayamatanga, became unforgettable figures for viewers who watched the production as children.

The story was subsequently translated into English under the title The Ultimate Power in 1994, helping it reach audiences beyond Yoruba-speaking communities.

The production also strengthened the reputation of Mount Zion Faith Ministries as a major force in Nigerian Christian drama and filmmaking.

A New Generation Takes Over

The return of Agbara Nla is being led creatively by a younger generation of the Bamiloye family.

Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua “Jay_Mikee” Mike-Bamiloye are bringing a contemporary filmmaking approach to a story originally created more than 30 years ago.

Veterans Mike and Gloria Bamiloye remain involved, creating a link between the production’s past and present.

That transition presents both an opportunity and a challenge. Older viewers will naturally compare the new movie with the version that shaped their memories, while younger audiences will experience the story without the same nostalgic attachment.

The filmmakers therefore have to strike a careful balance between respecting the original and presenting the story in a way that feels relevant to modern cinema audiences.

From Television to the Big Screen

Perhaps the biggest change is the move from television and home video to theatrical cinema.

The original belonged to an era when families gathered around television sets to watch Nigerian Christian productions. The new film, however, enters a cinema industry where audiences expect improved picture quality, sound, visual effects and more ambitious production values.

Agbara Nla: The Return has also involved contemporary production partners, including Sozo Films, Circuits and producer Chris Odeh.

The collaboration is expected to give the familiar story a modern cinematic presentation while maintaining its core identity.

Can It Match the Original?

The central question surrounding the new film is whether it can reproduce the emotional impact of its predecessor without simply copying it.

The spiritual conflict remains at the heart of the story, with the production continuing to draw from the Christian themes associated with Mount Zion Faith Ministries.

For the filmmakers, changing too little could make the story feel dated. Changing too much, however, could alienate viewers who expect the atmosphere and message that made Agbara Nla memorable.

That makes the October cinema release particularly significant.

Nostalgia Meets a New Generation

For millennials who grew up with the original, seeing Agbara Nla on a cinema screen could be an emotional trip down memory lane.

But nostalgia alone may not determine the film’s success.

Younger Nigerians have grown up with a vastly different entertainment landscape, with access to Nigerian blockbusters, international films and streaming platforms.

Agbara Nla: The Return will therefore have to appeal to two very different groups: viewers who already know the legend and those discovering the story for the first time.

The trailer has offered an early glimpse of the new direction, but the real test will come when audiences enter cinemas from October 1.

After 33 years, Agbara Nla is getting another opportunity to make an impression.

This time, however, the battle is not only between light and darkness. It is also a test of whether a beloved Nigerian Christian classic can successfully cross generations and find new life on the big screen.
