Jorge, 68 years old, departed in the early morning at a local hospital after facing an undisclosed illness for several months.
Jorge played a crucial role in influencing his son’s career by acting as his agent and handling all business matters. He traveled with young Lionel to Barcelona for his trial at La Masia, laying the groundwork for what would become a remarkable career. This journey culminated in Lionel winning eight Ballon d’Or awards and leading Argentina to World Cup triumph in 2022.
Carlos Ibañez, who owns a kiosk near the family’s previous home, spoke highly of Messi’s father. He described him as “an excellent person,” commenting that “Jorge made many sacrifices for his family. He worked long hours, often outdoors, dedicating himself tirelessly to their well-being.”

Jorge’s passing follows Messi’s disclosure of the personal challenges he encountered during this year’s World Cup. After the tournament, Messi spent some time in Argentina with his father before returning to Inter Miami a week ago.
The family asked for privacy regarding Jorge’s health after media reports about his condition.
Following Jorge’s passing, numerous clubs expressed their condolences to the family, including Real Madrid and Newell’s Old Boys—where Lionel played during his youth. CONMEBOL also joined in offering sympathies. The Argentine Football Association instructed that a minute of silence be observed at matches across the country and mandated that players, referees, and coaching staff wear black armbands as a sign of respect.
During Saturday’s Leagues Cup match against Monterrey, Inter Miami paid tribute to their absent captain’s father by observing a moment of silence before the game.
