On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV appealed for peace in Sudan while addressing the crowd assembled at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

He concentrated specifically on El-Obeid, the besieged capital of North Kordofan state. Residents there are grappling with acute shortages of food, water, and medical supplies as clashes occur between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for control over the city.

Leo expressed his profound concern about the tragic situation in Sudan, particularly in El-Obeid.

Showing solidarity with the people of Sudan, he called on those in authority to create humanitarian corridors for civilians. He also implored the international community to back initiatives aimed at achieving an immediate ceasefire. “Let us pray that the Lord aids those who are suffering, softens the hearts of those perpetuating violence, and brings about a long-awaited peace,” he stated.

Leo also expressed his worries about the ongoing violence in Ukraine and Russia, calling for adherence to humanitarian laws and an end to civilian attacks.

Leo added, “We must end the cycle of violence and allow diplomacy and dialogue to pave the path to peace.”
