Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has called for a de-escalation of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East as Israeli military operations continue in Gaza and other parts of the region.
El-Sissi made the call on Tuesday during a joint press conference with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Egyptian leader also reaffirmed Cairo’s opposition to actions that could threaten other Arab countries, stressing Egypt’s solidarity with neighbouring Arab nations.
“I also affirm Egypt’s steadfast stance rejecting any attempts to undermine our sister Arab nations, and our full solidarity with them, rooted in our firm belief in a shared destiny and the interconnectedness of Arab nations,” el-Sissi said.
His comments came amid renewed violence in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday reportedly wounded at least nine people.
Awda Hospital said it received the injured following an Israeli strike on a house in Nuseirat, in central Gaza.
The Israeli military confirmed that it had carried out strikes in several locations, including Nuseirat, the Daraj Tuffah area and Shati refugee camp.
Video footage from the Associated Press showed a rocket striking the Shati refugee camp, producing a large explosion and sending debris into the surrounding area.
The latest developments have added to concerns over the continuing humanitarian and security crisis in Gaza, while regional leaders continue to call for efforts to prevent further escalation.
