Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, has called for stronger representation for African countries and reforms that would give developing nations a greater voice in global decision-making.
Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, who previously represented Ondo South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, made the remarks while discussing Nigeria’s role at the United Nations General Assembly.
According to him, Nigeria’s message at the global forum should continue to focus on equality among nations, peace, poverty reduction, human rights and reforms to the international system.
He recalled Nigeria’s previous interventions at the United Nations, particularly the call for greater representation of African countries in global institutions.
Nigeria’s Push for UN Security Council Reform
Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim said Nigeria should continue to advocate for stronger African representation on the United Nations Security Council.
He has previously stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working to support Nigeria’s effort to secure a permanent seat for the country on the Security Council.
The Nigerian envoy said Africa should have a stronger voice in decisions affecting international peace and security.
He added that Nigeria should continue supporting reforms that would make global institutions more representative of developing countries.
From International Speeches to Practical Results
Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim said Nigeria’s participation at the UN should go beyond delivering speeches.
He argued that the country should use international engagements to build partnerships with governments, investors, international organisations and other development partners.
According to him, Nigeria’s positions on peace, poverty, human rights, education and economic development should be accompanied by practical efforts capable of producing tangible results.
He also emphasised the importance of attracting investment and creating opportunities that can benefit Nigerians after international meetings have ended.
Nigeria’s Domestic Challenges
While Nigeria seeks a stronger voice internationally, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim said attention must also remain focused on challenges facing citizens at home.
The cost of living, economic opportunities, education, technology and development remain important issues that require sustained attention.
He said Nigeria’s international ambitions should therefore complement its domestic development efforts.
The Permanent Representative added that international partnerships should ultimately translate into practical opportunities for Nigerians and contribute to national development.
Stronger African Voice
Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim’s position reflects Nigeria’s broader push for a stronger African voice in global affairs.
Nigeria has consistently advocated reforms of international institutions and greater African representation in global decision-making structures.
The Nigerian envoy, who presented his credentials as the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN in April 2026, has since taken an active role in representing Nigeria and African positions at the world body.
