Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is running for president under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has shared what a survivor told him about the miners who died in NSCDC custody in Niger State.
The account came in a statement issued Thursday by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu. Atiku said it was painful to hear.
He had gone to Niger State to sit with the families of the dead. One survivor told him 68 detainees were crammed into a single small cell. It got so bad, the man said, that they drank one another’s urine just to stay hydrated.
“It was a gory tale listening to one of the survivors. He told us that more than 68 of them were crammed into one small detention facility, and that conditions became so desperate that they had to drink one another’s urine just to stay hydrated,” Atiku said.
“No Nigerian should ever be subjected to such indignity in the custody of his own government,” he added.
Both the federal and Niger State governments have ordered investigations, according to Obasanjonews24.
