Aston Villa handed Manchester City their first Premier League defeat of the season with a disciplined 2–1 victory at Villa Park on Saturday, October 24, as Nicolas Jackson scored twice to end the visitors’ seven-match winning run.
The Senegalese striker opened the scoring in the sixth minute before restoring Villa’s lead on the hour mark, after Erling Haaland had equalised for Manchester City early in the second half.
The result ended City’s perfect start to the league campaign, although they remained top of the table on 21 points at the time of the match.
Jackson Punishes City’s Defensive Errors
Villa made an energetic start and took the lead when a poor touch by Manchester City defender Marc Guéhi allowed the hosts to attack.
John McGinn capitalised on the mistake and set up Jackson, who finished confidently to put Unai Emery’s side ahead.
City responded by increasing their attacking pressure, but Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced several important saves to protect his team’s advantage.
Iliman Ndiaye and Rayan Cherki tested the goalkeeper, while another effort from Ndiaye struck the post as City searched for an equaliser.
Haaland Levels the Score
Manchester City drew level in the 52nd minute when Haaland headed home a cross from Ndiaye.
The goal briefly shifted the momentum towards the visitors, who continued to threaten Villa’s defence. Suzuki, however, remained alert and denied City further opportunities, including a powerful effort from Josko Gvardiol that he tipped onto the crossbar.
Villa responded with another effective attacking move eight minutes after Haaland’s goal.
Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye advanced down the right and delivered the ball into Jackson’s path. The striker’s low effort beat City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, restoring Villa’s lead in the 60th minute.
Villa Hold Firm Under Pressure
Manchester City pushed for a second equaliser during the closing stages, but Villa defended resolutely.
Haaland came close to rescuing a point late in the match, only for Ian Maatsen to clear the effort off the goal line.
Villa held on to secure all three points, earning praise for their defensive organisation, counter-attacking threat and clinical finishing.
What the Result Means
The defeat ended Manchester City’s run of seven consecutive Premier League victories and gave their title rivals an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table.
City remained on 21 points following the match, while Aston Villa moved up to sixth place with 11 points.
For Villa manager Unai Emery, the victory represented an important result against one of the league’s leading sides.
Jackson emerged as the standout performer, while Suzuki’s saves and Maatsen’s late goal-line clearance proved crucial in securing the win.
Final score: Aston Villa 2–1 Manchester City
