A coalition of Ugandan and Kenyan activists has accused the Kenyan government of playing a role in the transfer of detained Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye to Uganda, where he is facing treason charges and experiencing serious health problems.

The activists made the accusation on Tuesday, calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Besigye’s removal from Kenya and subsequent detention in Uganda.

Besigye, a longtime critic of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, was reportedly abducted in Kenya in November 2024 while on a visit to the country. He later appeared before a Ugandan court over allegations of plotting against the government.

The activists argued that his transfer did not follow the proper extradition process required under Kenyan law.

According to the coalition, the operation bypassed procedures that should have included a formal extradition request, an arrest warrant, judicial proceedings and an opportunity for Besigye to challenge his transfer.

Calls for investigation

The group has demanded an investigation to determine who ordered, authorised and facilitated Besigye’s transfer, as well as whether the operation was subsequently concealed.

Rights activist Hussein Khalid of Vocal Africa said those responsible for what he described as an unlawful rendition should be held accountable.

The activists also urged the Kenyan government to use diplomatic and legal avenues to secure Besigye’s unconditional release and have the charges against him withdrawn.

Their position comes after Kenya’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi acknowledged last year that Kenyan authorities had cooperated with Ugandan officials in transferring Besigye.

Besigye’s health raises concern

Besigye’s deteriorating health has added urgency to the campaign for his release.

According to his wife, Winnie Byanyima, the opposition figure has been taken to hospital four times since his detention.

He reportedly collapsed during a court appearance at the end of July and required intensive medical treatment. Despite medical concerns, he was returned to prison on August 8, reportedly against medical advice.

The activists have called for demonstrations in Nairobi on Thursday to draw attention to his situation.

They have also accused Uganda’s military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is President Museveni’s son, of involvement in Besigye’s abduction and called for his suspension from his military position.

Human rights organisations have continued to raise concerns over political repression in Uganda, alleging that opposition politicians, supporters and lawyers have increasingly faced arrests and other forms of pressure.
